The Challenge
A large-scale dredging and reclamation project on the Lekki Peninsula required earthworks on newly reclaimed lagoon land — some of the most challenging subgrade conditions in West Africa. Newly deposited dredge material offers minimal bearing capacity and conventional plant cannot operate safely on the unstable surface without ground improvement. Any delay to the earthworks programme would push works into the wet season, compounding ground instability.
Our Solution
Willem Olaf executed the earthworks package, deploying geosynthetic reinforcement to enable plant and equipment to operate on the dredged surface. The geosynthetic layer distributes equipment loads across the soft dredge material, preventing sinkage and stabilising the reclaimed platform for subsequent development phases. Woven, Non Woven Geotextiles and Geogrids were deployed to stabilize the working platfrom and enable construction activities within the project.
The Outcome
The reclamation programme progressed on schedule, creating developable land from Lagos Lagoon within the dry-season construction window. This project demonstrates Willem Olaf’s capability as a full earthworks and geosynthetics contractor on premium Lekki Peninsula developments — one of the most technically demanding ground conditions in Lagos real estate.
