The Challenge
The Adada Dam required a geomembrane liner to reduce seepage losses through the dam face and reservoir floor — a common challenge for earthen dams in South-East Nigeria where high rainfall drives maximum utilisation of stored irrigation water. Uncontrolled seepage was reducing usable storage volume and limiting water availability to downstream farming communities during the dry season.
Our Solution
Willem Olaf procured and installed a non-woven geotextile cushion layer followed by HDPE geomembrane across all water-retaining surfaces of the dam. The geotextile protects the liner from subgrade irregularities while the HDPE membrane provides a continuous impermeable barrier, reducing seepage to within acceptable design limits.
The Outcome
Dam water storage efficiency was significantly improved, enhancing irrigation water availability for farming communities in the project area and contributing to Federal Government food security objectives. The project demonstrates Willem Olaf capability on federal water infrastructure, delivered to Federal Ministry of Water Resources specification.
