The Challenge
Reclaiming land from the Lagos Lagoon margin required containment of dredged fill material within bunded cells, prevention of saline water ingress into newly formed land parcels, and adequate ground bearing capacity across the reclaimed area — all on a site with soft alluvial mud, continuous tidal movement and no natural bearing capacity.
Our Solution
Willem Olaf supplied HDPE geomembrane as the bund and cell-floor containment liner to isolate the reclaimed fill from tidal saline water. Biaxial geogrid reinforcement was installed across the reclaimed platform to achieve the bearing capacity required for subsequent development loads on the soft dredged fill, without extensive surcharging or piling.
The Outcome
The reclaimed land was successfully contained and stabilised within a single dry-season programme, with the combined geomembrane and geogrid system providing both environmental containment and structural platform capability for the development phases that followed.
