Geogrids

Engineered grids that distribute load and reinforce weak subgrades for roads, slopes and retaining structures.

What It Is

Geogrids are polymer grid structures — manufactured from high-density polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester or coated fibreglass — with regular apertures that interlock with surrounding soil or aggregate particles. This interlock confines and redistributes load across a wider area, reducing vertical stress on the underlying subgrade. Uniaxial geogrids provide high strength in one direction for retaining walls and steep slopes; biaxial and triaxial geogrids distribute load multi-directionally for road and railway sub-base reinforcement; fibreglass geogrids reinforce asphalt overlays against reflective cracking. Willem Olaf supplies geogrids proven to extend pavement life and reduce construction costs on Nigeria's soft, laterite-heavy soils.

Representative values across the range. Confirm exact figures for the selected grade on the product datasheet.

Property Value
Aperture size 25 – 40 mm
Tensile strength (machine direction) 20 – 200 kN/m
Junction efficiency ≥ 93%
Tensile strength at 2% strain ≥ 8 kN/m
Material HDPE, PP, PET or coated fibreglass
Design life (buried) Up to 100 years

Applications

  • Rehabilitation of failed roads on weak laterite subgrades
  • Reinforcement of slopes and embankments
  • Mechanically stabilised earth (MSE) retaining walls
  • Railway sub-base reinforcement
  • Stabilisation of soft or swampy ground
  • Reflective crack control in asphalt overlays (fibreglass grids)

Benefits

Reduced Pavement Thickness

Distributes wheel loads to cut sub-base depth and aggregate volumes.

Extended Pavement Life

Limits rutting and cracking on weak laterite and clay subgrades.

Faster Construction

Stabilises soft ground quickly, even during the rainy season.
